The Importance of wearing SPF
also referred to as Sunblock or Sunscreen reduces the risk of skin cancers, lowers the risk of melanoma and helps prevent premature aging and hyperpigmentation. By incorporating SPF into your skincare routine you will prevent further damage while protecting all the good work you are doing with your products and treatments.
The SPF Low-down:
How does SPF work?
SPF blocks the UVA & UVB rays from the sun reducing the likelihood of sun damage. UVA rays are present all the time there is ‘sunlight’ whereas UVB rays increase when it is sunnier.
UVA – longer wavelengths, associated with skin aging.
UVB – shorter wavelengths, associated with skin burning.
Is there a difference between formulas?
Yes, there are two different formulas of SPF:
Chemical formulas
These absorb into the skin, creating a chemical reaction which changes UV rays into heat then releases that heat from the skin.
Physical formulas
Zinc based formulas which sit on top of the skin, physically blocking UV rays.
What do the numbers after SPF mean?
These are the ‘Sun Protection Factor’ which is the percentage of UVB which they filter. Higher the spf factor contains higher concentrations of chemical sunscreen ingredients.
There is double the amount of chemicals from 15% to 30% SPF with just an increase of 5% protection.
SPF 15 filters out 93% UVB rays
SPF 30 filters out 97% UVB rays
SPF 50 filters out 98% UVB rays
Do I need to reapply my SPF?
Yes, SPF should be reapplied every 2 hrs, especially after swimming & sweating.
Is Facial SPF different to what you apply to your body?
Yes, facial SPF is specifically designed for the face, with added skincare ingredients and considerably less ‘oily’ than Body formulas which could clog pores leading to breakouts.
When should I be incorporating SPF in my Skincare routine?
SPF is the last step of your skincare routine, typically over your moisturiser or you can use a SPF moisturiser, if you wear makeup your makeup goes on top of the SPF.
